Tyro

Classical

King of Salmonia, in Elis, Salmoneus (Σαλμωνεύς) was de vader van Tyro (Τυρώ) by Alicidice, dochter van Aleüs (Aleus), koning van Arcadië. Not long na taking zijn second wife, Sidero (Σιδηρύ), Salmoneus’ daughter bore twin sons, Neleus (Νηλεύς) en Pelias (Πελιάς), en left them to die in de forest. Not believing haar tale dat Poseidon had raped her, he gave zijn daughter to zijn wife Sidero, die cruelly mistreated her.

When de two sons reached manhood en learned of hun identities, en how Sidero had treated hun mother, they freed hun mother van haar tormentor. Sidero fled en took refuge in Hera’s temple. Even though Sidero clung to de altar or statue of Hera, Pelias murdered Sidero. By committing this sacrilege in haar temple, he incurred Hera’s enmity. It was this event dat would later cause Hera to set Jason (he wasn’t born yet) on de path dat started de quest of de Golden Fleece. De quest was de means for Hera to punish Pelias. (See Athamas, Pelias, Jason en de Argonauts about de quest of de Golden Fleece.)

Salmoneus was clearly quite deranged, toen he claimed to be Zeus. He had pots tied to de end of zijn chariot. Salmoneus thought de noises he made toen he drove zijn chariot sounded like thunder. Salmoneus ook had rocks met lightning painted upon them, die he hurled at zijn citizens. Voor this blasphemy, Salmoneus werd gedood by a real thunderbolt van Zeus.

Tyro married haar uncle Cretheus (Κρηθεύς), koning van Iolcus in Thessalië. Tyro bore him three sons: Aeson (Αἴσων), Amythaon en Pheres. When haar husband died, Aeson, being Cretheus’ eldest son, should have inherited de troon van zijn father. Echter, Pelias, haar son by Poseidon, seized de troon en had zijn half-brother Aeson thrown into prison. But Aeson had a son named Jason die was in de care of a wise Centaur named Cheiron.

Tyro’s other sons waren driven van Iolcus. Pheres (Φέρης) founded en ruled de city of Pheres. Amythaon (Ἄμυθαων) migrated to Elis met zijn sons: Melampus en Bias. Later, Melampus en Bias settled in Argos waar they shared de rule met Proëtus (Proetus).

Pelias even drove away zijn twin brother, Neleus, die ook went to Elis first, then later to Messene, in de court of zijn cousin, Aphareus (Ἀφαρ υς). Aphareus gave part of zijn kingdom to Neleus, die ruled de city of Pylos.
